Summary

'I'm not afraid of storms, for I'm learning how to sail my ship。'

Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth - four "little women" enduring hardships and enjoying adventures in Civil War New England The charming story of the March sisters, Little Women has been adored by generations。 Readers have rooted for Laurie in his pursuit of Jo's hand, cried over little Beth's death, and dreamed of travelling through Europe with old Aunt March and Amy。 Future writers have found inspiration in Jo's devotion to her writing。 In this simple, enthralling tale, both parts of which are included here, Louisa May Alcott has created four of American literature's most beloved women。

The Penguin English Library - collectable general readers' editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century to the end of the Second World War。

This book was so enjoyable! The writing was wonderful, and it was such a treat getting to follow the stories of Jo March and her family members。 I loved the individual plot lines, the beautiful imagery in the writing, and the emotion that was defined and established throughout the entire book。 Like the endnote suggested, is perfect to read regardless of your age - each woman can take something away from reading it。 Was really interesting to see how the role of a woman used to be defined, and it This book was so enjoyable! So very long and very preachy but despite that, it did have some good points as long as you're not getting provoced by choice of words and remember that what can seem offensive today doesn't always have the same meaning or intent back then。 I'm glad it's over and hadn't i listen to the audio book then I'd, I might not have finished it So very long and very preachy but despite that, it did have some good points as long as you're not getting provoced by choice of words and remember that what can seem offensive today doesn't always have the same meaning or intent back then。 I'm glad it's over and hadn't i listen to the audio book then I'd, I might not have finished it 。。。more

Great novel, of course, and Laura Dern performs well as the narrator。 But why did the directors get adult actors to play the children's voices? This book is definitely a classical book with its language and grammar so it's not for everyone and I can understand why。 But as for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed living the lives of my favorite little women。 No spoilers but I think all the couples and problems worked out in a beautiful way, but a real life way, not ways that some solve them and then act like it's all okay or it never happened。 I don't really have a favorite little woman because I loved reading all of them grow and actually (at l This book is definitely a classical book with its language and grammar so it's not for everyone and I can understand why。 But as for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed living the lives of my favorite little women。 No spoilers but I think all the couples and problems worked out in a beautiful way, but a real life way, not ways that some solve them and then act like it's all okay or it never happened。 I don't really have a favorite little woman because I loved reading all of them grow and actually (at least try) to learn from their mistakes。 Personally though, I am very much like Jo in almost every sense so I was glad to read about such an independent and family-loving character in that era of life。 I think everyone should read this book, no matter gender, but just know that language and phrasing might be challenging at certain points。 。。。more

even moral lectures should have an end。 I'm sorry but I physically couldn't stand this book。 I liked the movies and I like the general outline of the characters so I was really looking forward to this as I thought I was going to be faced with some kind of cute likable classic, maybe a little boring but enjoyable nonetheless。 Instead, I got page after page of preaching and life lessons and morality shoved into every tiny plot point and I just found it suffocating to read。During the first half even moral lectures should have an end。 I'm sorry but I physically couldn't stand this book。 I liked the movies and I like the general outline of the characters so I was really looking forward to this as I thought I was going to be faced with some kind of cute likable classic, maybe a little boring but enjoyable nonetheless。 Instead, I got page after page of preaching and life lessons and morality shoved into every tiny plot point and I just found it suffocating to read。During the first half of the book, I was bored but in a way that made me feel I should have read this book as a child because I may have appreciated its simplicity more。 During the second half, I was SO HAPPY that I had never read this book as a child because the amount of shame and guilt and judgement that's in the story was mind-boggling to me。 The characters are all model citizens and pure souls in a very one-dimensional way which is not necessarily a thing I hate, okay? I'm not here saying everyone should be evil and this book is unrealistic because, idk, Jo never kills anyone or whatever。 What annoys me is how every single non-angelic thing the characters do is met with horror and disgust by the other characters and leads to them facing crazy repercussions。 For example, the whole chapter about Jo writing "sensation stories" for the newspaper and the SHAME the others bestowed upon her as though she was committing the worst crime ever was baffling to me。 I couldn't understand why Laurie was even friends with these guys because the poor guy couldn't do anything without being judged to death by them about how he's no longer a sensible boy。 And worst of all, spoiler, but who doesn't already know this at this point: Beth literally ends up DYING because at one point in their lives, her sisters were too lazy to go visit a sick family。 I just 。。。 I'm sorry, I had to pause and take a few deep breaths multiple times as I read this story。 I am genuinely perplexed as to why this is so many people's favorite book, to be honest。 I mean no disrespect, if you were able to enjoy it and if it's a nostalgic childhood classic for you, that's great; but for me, outside of the occasionally cute sisterly bonds, I really found no redeemable qualities here。 。。。more
